From The Director's Desk

Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.

Hopefully by the time you read this column, the warm weather has finally arrived. As I write it, although the calendar says April, there are still remnants of snow piles to be seen. This, however, has not stopped us from planning our summer reading clubs! Again, the Library will be running three different programs: Groundbreaking Reads for adults ages 18 and over, Beneath the Surface for ages 12-17, and Dig Into Reading for ages 3-11. Details of all clubs can be found within this newsletter.

Once again, the Derby Public Library was the recipient of a generous gift from one of our long time patrons. Heidi Kaplan, fund advisor for the Kaplan Family Fund at the Valley Community Foundation, requested a $500 grant be given to the Library. These funds will be used to enhance patron services. It has been a pleasure and an honor to hear, Heidi, as well as other long time patrons share their wonderful memories of the Library throughout the years. And speaking of long time Library patron, Felicia Monaco was recently appointed as a Library Board of Director by Mayor Staffieri. Felicia and her children have been avid users of the Library throughout the years. Welcome!

I hope everyone has been taking the time to view the interesting collections in our main level display case. During the month of March, Doug Smith, Hersam Acorn Editorial Cartoonist, displayed his original artwork. Thank you, Doug, for sharing your talents with us! Mary Ann Vlahac, Marketing Coordinator for TEAM, Inc. and program presenter at the Library, shared her unique doll collection with us during the month of April. Thank you, Mary Ann! We are always looking for new displays. Please let us know if you have a special collection, artwork or memorabilia you would like to share.

Don’t forget to go to http://snapshotctlib.wordpress.com to view pictures and comments from Snapshot Day. Be sure to join us for our annual upcoming events, including our Spring Open House and Harcourt Wood’s Memorial Birthday Celebration. See you at the Library!
