From The Director's Desk
Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgiving, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.

It is hard to believe that this is the last newsletter of 2013. I hate to admit it, but it really is true - the older you get, the faster time seems to pass. And while each month has its own special nuances, nothing reminds me more of the importance of family than the months of November and December. So as the holidays approach, I hope you take the time to spend time with both your family at home and your “family” here at the Derby Public Library.
Now before we start roasting the turkey and trimming the tree, let me bring you up to date on the latest here at the Library:
Over the past few months, you may have noticed some staff changes. Former Library Assistant, Marc Weissman, is now our Technology/Reference Librarian. Marc has morning, afternoon, and evening hours to better assist you. Andrew Bisaccia is our new Library Assistant. Andrew will be happy to help you at the adult circulation desk.
Beginning January 1, 2014, Connecticut will launch a consumer-friendly health insurance marketplace, Access Health CT, as required under the Affordable Care Act. Sign-ups began on Oct. 1. Realizing that this new insurance opportunity can be somewhat confusing, the Library has available all the information you need to help you navigate the process.
The Library recently received a grant from the Selma A. and Harold B. Fund with the Valley Community Foundation for a light-filtering system to protect both local history materials and computers from the harsh effects of direct sunlight. The Yudkins have been long-time supporters of the Derby Public Library, and we thank Mrs. Yudkin for her generosity once again. Look for pictures in our next newsletter!
The Library is happy to once again be participating in TEAM, Inc. Toys 4 Kids. We will have a box available at both the adult and children’s circulation area for you to drop off your unwrapped toys. Please consider bringing some joy into the lives of area children this holiday.
Many of you have been asking about our Tech Time classes. We are happy to announce that they will be resuming in January. Please stop by the reference desk and let Marc know the topics you would like to see covered.
Again, I hope to see you all at the Library during the coming months. As always we have great programs planned (including one of my annual favorites, the CT Yuletide Carolers) and great resources available, along with simply being a great place to spend some time. To keep up with all our activities, please "like" us on Facebook.
Our once very active Friends of the Derby Public Library is looking to re-energize! If you would like to join this wonderful support group, forms are available on our website and at our circulation desks. More information, including meeting dates, will be available in January.
Also coming in January is a new program series called “Just for Women.” This will be a time for women, ages eighteen and over, to come together and discuss issues that are important to them.
Wishing you the blessings of peace, love, and joy during this holiday season.
Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmas time.
